Steroid injections

At The Hanham Clinic in Bristol, we offer steroid injections (also called cortisone injections) to reduce inflammation and relieve pain from a range of musculoskeletal conditions. Common uses include knee and hip osteoarthritis, bursitis, tendinitis, peritendinitis, and chronic soft tissue pain. All steroid injections in Bristol are performed using ultrasound guidance, allowing precise delivery of medication directly to the affected area. This ensures maximum effectiveness while minimising discomfort, helping you get the targeted relief you need safely and efficiently.

Hyaluronic Acid Injections

We offer hyaluronic acid injections in Bristol as a non-steroidal option to manage joint pain, especially for patients with knee or hip osteoarthritis. This treatment is ideal for mild to moderate arthritic joints, those seeking an alternative to steroid injections, or ongoing symptom management after a previous injection. Hyaluronic acid is a natural component of joint fluid that improves viscosity and lubrication when injected, supporting smoother joint movement and reducing discomfort. All injections at our Bristol clinic are performed with ultrasound guidance for precise and effective treatment.

Diagnostic Injections

If you’re experiencing pain with an uncertain cause, our diagnostic injections in Bristol can help identify the source. Using ultrasound guidance, we inject a local anaesthetic precisely into the suspected area—whether the hip joint, pelvis, or lower back. Real-time imaging ensures accurate delivery, allowing us to pinpoint which structure is causing your pain. If your discomfort improves after the injection, it confirms the source of the problem, enabling us to create a more targeted and effective treatment plan tailored to your needs.

Fluid Aspiration

At The Hanham Clinic in Bristol, we offer joint and Baker’s cyst aspirations to help relieve pain and improve mobility. Aspiration involves using a needle, guided by ultrasound, to safely remove excess fluid from swollen joints or cysts. This procedure can help reduce pressure and inflammation, potentially easing discomfort and stiffness. Baker’s cysts, often related to knee issues, may cause symptoms that aspiration aims to alleviate. Our experienced team performs all aspirations with precision and care to ensure your comfort and safety throughout the treatment.

Dean Matthews
Chiropractor, MSK Sonographer & Clinic Director

Dean is a skilled Chiropractor with over a decade of experience, dedicated to providing exceptional chiropractic care. He earned his Chiropractic degree over 10 years ago after completing an intensive 4-year programme at the prestigious AECC University College in Bournemouth, renowned for its excellence in chiropractic education.

During his final clinical placement year, Dean honed his clinical expertise, preparing himself to graduate and serve in various musculoskeletal-based clinics across the UK.

After many years in private practice, Dean set up The Hanham Clinic in 2019 (formerly known as Skelian Chiropractic Clinic), after previously running an award winning clinic in Cheltenham where he was also the Clinic Co-Director.

Chiropractic care, to Dean, is a science-based discipline. His approach goes beyond symptom relief; he focuses on identifying and correcting the root cause of your discomfort. Dean understands that the point of pain isn’t always where the problem originates. In addition to his chiropractic expertise, Dean is also qualified in dry needling (medical acupuncture). He brings his pitch-side first aid experience, having previously worked with Bradford-on-Avon Rugby club, where he had the privilege of working under the guidance of ex-England Rugby International- Lewis Moody, the club coach at the time.

Dean is committed to staying current with his knowledge in healthcare. At the beginning of 2023, after 18 months of study, he obtained his post-graduate certification in Medical Ultrasound through the University of the West of England (UWE), specialising in diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound. His specialisation in diagnosing musculoskeletal conditions enhances his ability to provide comprehensive care as a practitioner.

Dean’s passion for health and wellness extends beyond his clinic. He grew up playing Rugby in Bristol and now actively participates with Yate RFC on weekends. You may also spot him competing in triathlons, attending CrossFit sessions in Warmley, and enjoying quality time with his wife and two children or taking leisurely walks with their Cocker Spaniel.
