Unlike general relaxation massage, our treatments are designed to address the underlying causes of pain, including muscular dysfunction, sports injuries, postural strain, and chronic tension patterns.
Patients visit us from across Bristol, including Hanham, Kingswood, Longwell Green, and surrounding areas, seeking evidence-based treatment that delivers measurable results.
Clinical Massage Therapy & Sports Massage in Bristol
Massage therapy at The Hanham Clinic is a clinical soft tissue treatment approach used to assess, treat, and manage musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction.
We use a combination of hands-on techniques tailored to each patient, with the aim of improving movement, reducing pain, and supporting recovery from injury or overuse.
Sports massage is a more targeted approach, commonly used to manage soft tissue stress caused by training, physical activity, or repetitive strain. It is suitable for both active individuals and those experiencing occupational or lifestyle-related muscular tension.
In some cases, treatment may be supported by our wider clinical services, including chiropractic care
and diagnostic assessment.
Your Initial Appointment
1. Discussion of Health Status and Symptoms
Your massage journey starts with a detailed health discussion, where we explore your medical history, lifestyle, and any specific issues you’re experiencing. Helping us tailor your massage treatment to suit your unique needs.
2. Physical and Posture Exam
We conduct a gentle physical and posture assessment to identify areas of tension, misalignment, or restricted movement. This allows us to deliver a more targeted and effective therapeutic massage.
3. First Massage Treatment
Based on our findings, you’ll receive your first personalised massage treatment. Using a range of massage techniques, we focus on relieving pain, reducing tension, and restoring balance to your body.
4. Aftercare Advice
After your massage session, we’ll provide expert aftercare advice, including stretches, self-massage tips, and lifestyle recommendations, to help you prolong the benefits and support your recovery.
5. Treatment Plan and Recommendation
To help you achieve lasting results, we’ll outline a customised massage treatment plan. Whether you need short-term relief or long-term care, we’ll guide you toward better mobility, comfort, and wellbeing.

Sports Massage & Deep Tissue
Our sports massage uses firmer, targeted techniques to treat muscle fatigue, overuse injuries, and soft tissue strain. Ideal for athletes and active people, it supports recovery, boosts performance, and prevents injury. Located in Hanham, we provide results-focused treatments tailored to your training.

Therapeutic Massage
The therapeutic massage uses gentler, less firm techniques than sports or deep tissue massage to ease muscle tension, improve circulation, and reduce daily aches. Perfect for stress relief and general recovery. Based in Hanham, Bristol, each session is tailored to your individual comfort and needs.

Trigger Point Therapy
While trigger point therapy is a focused treatment that targets painful knots and tight bands in muscles. This technique reduces referred pain, improves mobility, and restores function. Available at The Hanham Clinic, it’s ideal for chronic tension and injury-related discomfort in the Bristol area.

Conditions We Treat with Massage Therapy & Sports Massage
Patients commonly attend the clinic for help with musculoskeletal conditions affecting daily function, movement, and comfort.
Massage therapy and sports massage are frequently used to support:
- Back pain and lumbar stiffness
- Neck and shoulder tension
- Sports and activity-related injuries
- Muscle tightness and restricted movement
- Postural strain from desk-based work
- Overuse and repetitive strain injuries
- Headaches linked to muscular tension
These conditions are assessed individually, and treatment is adapted based on clinical findings rather than a fixed routine.
For persistent or complex cases, we may recommend further investigation such as musculoskeletal ultrasound scans or MRI scans to support accurate diagnosis.
Sports Massage Bristol – Who It Is For
This is not limited to professional athletes. At The Hanham Clinic, it is used for anyone experiencing muscular overload, restriction, or recovery issues.
This includes people who:
- Train regularly or participate in sport
- Experience muscle tightness after activity
- Are recovering from injury or strain
- Have physically demanding occupations
- Suffer from recurring muscular tension
The goal of sports massage is to improve tissue quality, reduce recovery time, and support long-term physical performance and resilience.
Deep Tissue & Clinical Massage Therapy
A deep tissue massage focuses on deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue that often contribute to chronic pain and restricted movement.
This approach is particularly effective for long-standing tension patterns that do not respond to general massage techniques.
Clinical massage therapy may also include trigger point work and targeted soft tissue release techniques to address specific areas of dysfunction identified during assessment.
FAQs About Our Massage Services in Hanham, Bristol | The Hanham Clinic
Who will provide my massage?
Your massage sessions will be provided by one of our highly trained therapists, who each have developed a slightly different skillset and background. It is important to recognise that your session will be tailored toward your needs and preferences, which will be discussed with you at your initial consultation with us.
Before you book your appointment you can choose a practitioner and if you are unsure of who would best be suited to help you then you can always discuss this with us first over the phone.
We have two practitioners available, Aaron Lightbody and Tommy Jermyn, who you are able to chose from when booking your appointment through our website.
What should I expect at my massage consultation?
During this part of your appointment, you may wish to highlight your particular areas of discomfort or concern, which will be taken into account and addressed during your treatment session.
Normally, a brief examination will take place in order to help your practitioner identify the main areas of concern- and then any proposed treatment is discussed with you. After this, with your consent, your first treatment will also take place where we begin to get you feeling better again!
