What Does an MRI Shoulder Scan Show?

The shoulder is one of the most complex joints in the body, relying on a delicate balance of muscles, tendons, ligaments and cartilage to function correctly. X-ray can show bone structure but misses most soft tissue pathology, making MRI the essential investigation for the majority of shoulder conditions.

An MRI shoulder scan at The Hanham Clinic can identify:

  • Rotator cuff tears –  partial or full thickness tears of the supraspinatus, infraspinatus, subscapularis or teres minor tendons
  • Rotator cuff tendinopathy – tendon degeneration and inflammation without a full tear
  • Shoulder impingement – subacromial space narrowing causing pinching of soft tissues
  • Labral tears – damage to the cartilage ring (labrum) surrounding the shoulder socket, including SLAP tears
  • Shoulder instability – assessment of structures contributing to recurrent dislocation or subluxation
  • Biceps tendon pathology – long head of biceps tears or tendinopathy
  • Acromioclavicular (AC) joint injury – joint separation or arthritis
  • Glenohumeral osteoarthritis – cartilage loss and joint degeneration
  • Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) – capsular thickening and inflammation
  • Bursitis – subacromial or subdeltoid bursal inflammation

Who Should Consider a Private MRI Shoulder Scan in Bristol?

A private MRI shoulder scan is appropriate for patients who:

  • Have persistent shoulder pain lasting more than 4–6 weeks that has not improved with rest, physiotherapy or chiropractic treatment
  • Experienced a shoulder injury, a fall, dislocation, throwing injury or impact and want a clear diagnosis
  • Have pain or weakness specifically when lifting the arm above shoulder height
  • Experience pain at night that disrupts sleep, a common feature of rotator cuff pathology
  • Play sport involving overhead or throwing actions (cricket, tennis, swimming, gym, rugby) and have developed shoulder pain
  • Are being considered for shoulder surgery and want imaging to confirm the nature and extent of the problem
  • Are on an NHS waiting list and want faster access to a diagnosis
  • Have unexplained clicking, catching or grinding in the shoulder joint

Common Shoulder Conditions We Scan For

Rotator Cuff Tears

The rotator cuff is a group of four muscles and their tendons that stabilise and move the shoulder. Tears are extremely common, particularly in people over 40, manual workers, and those who participate in overhead sports. Symptoms include pain on lifting, weakness, and often significant night pain. MRI is the gold standard for diagnosing and grading rotator cuff tears, which directly influences the decision between conservative treatment and surgical repair.

Shoulder Impingement Syndrome

Impingement occurs when tendons or bursa in the shoulder become compressed during arm movement, typically when raising the arm to the side or front. It is one of the most common shoulder conditions seen in both active and sedentary adults. MRI confirms the diagnosis and identifies any associated tendon damage or bursitis.

Labral Tears (including SLAP Tears)

The labrum is a ring of fibrocartilage that deepens the shoulder socket. Labral tears, particularly SLAP (Superior Labrum Anterior to Posterior) tears, are common in throwing athletes, overhead workers, and following shoulder dislocations. They cause deep shoulder pain, clicking and instability. MRI arthrography or standard MRI can identify these injuries clearly.

Frozen Shoulder

Adhesive capsulitis causes progressive stiffness and pain in the shoulder, often without a clear injury trigger. MRI can help confirm the diagnosis and rule out other conditions with similar presentations. Understanding the stage of frozen shoulder helps guide appropriate treatment.

Sports-Related Shoulder Injuries

Bristol has a strong sporting community across cricket, rugby, tennis, swimming, CrossFit and gym training, all activities that place significant demands on the shoulder. Whether you have sustained an acute injury or are dealing with a gradually worsening overuse problem, MRI provides the clarity needed to guide your recovery.

What to Expect at Your MRI Shoulder Scan Appointment

Before your scan:

No special preparation is required. You will be asked to complete a safety questionnaire checking for any contraindications (such as certain metal implants, pacemakers or cochlear implants). Please wear or bring comfortable, loose-fitting clothing, ideally without metal fastenings near the shoulder area.

During your scan:

You will be positioned on the scanner table with your shoulder correctly placed for imaging. The open design of our MRI system is significantly more comfortable than traditional closed tunnel scanners. The scan typically takes 20–40 minutes. Some noise is normal during the scan.

After your scan:

A specialist musculoskeletal radiologist will review and report on your images. You will receive a full written report, typically within a few working days. If you are under the care of The Hanham Clinic’s clinical team, your chiropractor can discuss the report findings and advise on next steps at your follow-up appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions – MRI Shoulder Scan Bristol

Do I need a GP referral for a private MRI shoulder scan?
No. We accept self-referrals, you can book directly without needing to see your GP first. If you have a referral letter from a GP, physiotherapist, chiropractor or other clinician, please bring it as it will help provide clinical context for the radiologist.
How quickly can I get an appointment?
We offer fast appointment availability. Contact us to check current availability, waiting times are typically significantly shorter than NHS pathways.
Is the scanner suitable for patients who dislike enclosed spaces?
Yes, our open MRI design is far less enclosed than traditional tunnel scanners, making it considerably more comfortable for patients who experience anxiety or claustrophobia.
My shoulder pain is mainly at night, is MRI appropriate?
Night pain is one of the classic symptoms of rotator cuff pathology and shoulder bursitis. MRI is the most effective way to identify these conditions and understand their severity. If shoulder pain is disrupting your sleep, it is worth investigating properly.
Can I combine a shoulder scan with another area?
Yes, if you need imaging of two regions (for example, shoulder and cervical spine, or shoulder and elbow), this can be arranged for £549 under our introductory two-region pricing. This can be particularly useful as neck and shoulder problems often coexist.
How long does the scan take?
A shoulder MRI typically takes 20–40 minutes. You will be able to leave immediately after the scan and resume normal activities.
Is free parking available?
Yes. free on-site parking is available at Hanham Hall, with ground floor access and disabled parking.
