How Does Shockwave Therapy Work?

At our Hanham Clinic in Bristol, we offer radial shockwave therapy—a non-invasive treatment that uses sound waves to stimulate the body’s natural healing process. This therapy is effective for various musculoskeletal conditions, including tendon and ligament injuries.

During treatment, a handheld device delivers high-energy pulses to the affected area, increasing blood flow, breaking down scar tissue, and triggering tissue repair. Each session is tailored to your specific condition and needs.

Our Bristol team is fully trained in evidence-based shockwave techniques, ensuring safe, effective care.

What Conditions Is Shockwave Treatment Recommended For?

Shockwave therapy is backed by strong clinical evidence for treating chronic tendon and soft tissue conditions—especially where other treatments haven’t worked. It’s ideal for long-term issues like tendinopathy.

At our Bristol clinic, we use shockwave therapy for conditions such as:

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Achilles tendinopathy
  • Shoulder calcific tendinopathy
  • Patellar tendinopathy (jumper’s knee)
  • Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis)

These conditions respond well to shockwave, with studies showing reduced pain and improved function. NICE also supports its use under proper clinical guidance.

What to Expect During Shockwave Treatment

At our Bristol clinic, shockwave treatment is tailored to you following a detailed assessment. You’ll feel a tapping or pulsing sensation over the injury, with the intensity adjusted for comfort.

Most people return to normal activity right after a session, and some notice immediate relief. Mild soreness afterward is normal and part of the body’s healing response.

We’ll also guide you through rehab exercises to support recovery—these are key to getting the best results from your shockwave treatment.

FAQs About Radial Shockwave Treatment in Hanham, Bristol | The Hanham Clinic

What is the cost of shockwave therapy?

The cost of shockwave therapy varies between clinics and locations across the UK, depending on several factors. At The Hanham Clinic in Bristol, a course of 4 sessions is priced at £260, and a course of 6 sessions is £390. Additional individual sessions are available at £68 each. Nationally, prices typically range between £60 and £85 per session.

What are the success rates of shockwave therapy?

Shockwave therapy has demonstrated strong success rates, particularly for certain chronic musculoskeletal conditions that have not responded well to other treatments (see above).

Success can vary depending on the specific condition and individual response, but clinical studies and patient outcomes have generally been very positive.

At your consultation we discuss more specific outcomes that you can expect, that are appropriate to your diagnosis, prior to you deciding wether to proceed with shockwave therapy.

Can I get shockwave therapy on the NHS?

Yes, shockwave therapy is available on the NHS, but access can be limited. Not all NHS hospitals offer the service, and where it is available, patients may face longer waiting times and a more restricted number of sessions compared to private care.

What are the drawbacks of shockwave therapy?
Shockwave therapy doesn’t always offer immediate relief. Its benefits are usually cumulative, building gradually over a period of 6 weeks or more, so patience is important.

It’s generally not recommended for very recent or acute injuries, and is more commonly used for persistent conditions that haven’t responded to other treatments. Like all therapies, it’s not guaranteed to eliminate symptoms entirely, and in some cases, further investigations or specialist input may be required.

Is shockwave treatment painful?

The intensity of treatment can be adjusted to stay within a tolerable range for each individual. While some discomfort during treatment is common, it is generally manageable. Mild soreness or aggravation of symptoms for 24–48 hours afterward is also a typical and expected response.

How many sessions of shockwave therapy do you typically need?

The number of sessions needed depends on the individual, the condition being treated, and its duration. On average, 4 to 6 sessions are required for most conditions. In some cases, as few as 3 or as many as 8 sessions may be recommended.

Why does shockwave therapy cost more than physiotherapy or chiropractic treatment?
Shockwave therapy involves the use of advanced medical equipment, which is expensive to purchase and maintain. These higher operational costs are reflected in the price of treatment, which is typically more than standard physiotherapy or chiropractic sessions.
What shockwave machine do you use at The Hanham Clinic?

At The Hanham Clinic, we use a state-of-the-art shockwave machine from Storz Medical, the leading supplier of shockwave systems in the UK. The specific model we use is the Masterpulse (MP)-200, a more powerful and robust system compared to some smaller models, and trusted by both private and NHS hospitals across the country.

Is there a difference between radial and Extra-corporeal Shockwave Therapy? (ESWT)
This is a question that we are commonly asked and understandably, can be a confusing topic.

To answer to this question in short- is NO. There is no different between the two terms and they are interchangeably used when referring to shockwave therapy.

The term “radial” refers to the type of radial pressure wave that is generated by the shockwave machine, for such treatment.

The term “Extra-corporeal” and abbreviation “ESWT” refer to the fact that is is applied to the body externally.

Dean is a skilled Chiropractor with over a decade of experience, dedicated to providing exceptional chiropractic care. He earned his Chiropractic degree over 10 years ago after completing an intensive 4-year programme at the prestigious AECC University College in Bournemouth, renowned for its excellence in chiropractic education.

During his final clinical placement year, Dean honed his clinical expertise, preparing himself to graduate and serve in various musculoskeletal-based clinics across the UK.

After many years in private practice, Dean set up The Hanham Clinic in 2019 (formerly known as Skelian Chiropractic Clinic), after previously running an award winning clinic in Cheltenham where he was also the Clinic Co-Director.

Chiropractic care, to Dean, is a science-based discipline. His approach goes beyond symptom relief; he focuses on identifying and correcting the root cause of your discomfort. Dean understands that the point of pain isn’t always where the problem originates. In addition to his chiropractic expertise, Dean is also qualified in dry needling (medical acupuncture). He brings his pitch-side first aid experience, having previously worked with Bradford-on-Avon Rugby club, where he had the privilege of working under the guidance of ex-England Rugby International- Lewis Moody, the club coach at the time.

Dean is committed to staying current with his knowledge in healthcare. At the beginning of 2023, after 18 months of study, he obtained his post-graduate certification in Medical Ultrasound through the University of the West of England (UWE), specialising in diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound. His specialisation in diagnosing musculoskeletal conditions enhances his ability to provide comprehensive care as a practitioner.

Dean’s passion for health and wellness extends beyond his clinic. He grew up playing Rugby in Bristol and now actively participates with Yate RFC on weekends. You may also spot him competing in triathlons, attending CrossFit sessions in Warmley, and enjoying quality time with his wife and two children or taking leisurely walks with their Cocker Spaniel.
