When you’re living with persistent joint pain, a suspected soft tissue injury, or a problem that just isn’t getting better, waiting weeks or months for answers can feel genuinely frustrating. NHS waiting times for MRI scans have grown significantly in recent years, and for many people in Bristol that delay means postponing treatment, missing work, or simply having to live with uncertainty about what’s going on inside their body.

Private MRI scanning offers a straightforward alternative. You choose your appointment time, you’re seen quickly, and you walk away with a detailed specialist report that gives you and any treating clinician the clarity you need to move forward. Here at The Hanham Clinic, we installed a brand-new MRI scanner in early 2026 to do exactly that for patients across Bristol and the surrounding area.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through how private MRI scanning works, what it’s used for, what sets our service apart, and how to book your scan.

What Is an MRI Scan?

MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging. Unlike X-rays or CT scans, which use radiation, an MRI uses powerful magnetic fields and radio waves to build highly detailed images of the structures inside your body. It’s a safe, painless procedure with no radiation exposure whatsoever.

The technology is particularly well-suited to soft tissue imaging. It can show muscles, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, spinal discs and nerves with a level of detail that other imaging methods simply cannot match. That’s why MRI is the gold standard investigation for the vast majority of musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions.

A typical scan at our clinic takes around 45 minutes, depending on the area being assessed. You’ll lie still in our open-design scanner while images are captured, and the procedure is completely painless. The resulting images are reviewed by a specialist MSK radiologist, who produces a written report typically delivered promptly after your appointment.

What Conditions Can a Private MRI Detect?

Our private MRI service in Bristol is specifically designed around musculoskeletal health. That means injuries, chronic pain and joint problems involving bones, cartilage, tendons, ligaments and the spine. Common reasons patients come to us include:

  • Knee problems such as meniscus tears, ACL, PCL or MCL injuries, cartilage damage, or unexplained swelling. If you’re struggling with knee or hip pain, an MRI can provide crucial structural information that guides treatment. You can find out more about our dedicated MRI knee scan service here.
  • Shoulder injuries including rotator cuff tears, labral damage, bursitis and tendinopathy. Shoulder pain is one of the most common reasons patients request an MRI, and our dedicated MRI shoulder scan service is tailored to exactly these kinds of presentations.
  • Spinal problems such as disc bulges, nerve compression, facet joint changes, and spinal stenosis. If you’re dealing with back pain or sciatica, an MRI of the lumbar or cervical spine can reveal the root cause far more clearly than an X-ray alone.
  • Hip conditions including labral tears, femoroacetabular impingement, trochanteric bursitis and early osteoarthritis.
  • Foot and ankle injuries such as Achilles tendinopathy, plantar fasciitis, tendon tears and ligament sprains.
  • Elbow and wrist problems including tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, ligament injuries and ganglions.

Our advanced imaging sequences are designed to detect subtle structural changes, inflammation, tendon or ligament damage that might not be visible on other forms of imaging. If you’re not certain whether you need an MRI or an ultrasound scan, our team can help you work out the most appropriate route.

MRI vs Diagnostic Ultrasound: Which One Do You Need?

Both MRI and ultrasound are excellent diagnostic tools, but they work in different ways and suit different clinical situations. Ultrasound is particularly good for real-time, dynamic assessment of tendons and soft tissues, making it ideal for conditions like rotator cuff problems, plantar fasciitis and tendinopathies. It’s also faster and more cost-effective for many presentations.

MRI gives greater depth of field and can assess deeper structures such as spinal discs, cartilage, bone marrow and nerves. It’s the preferred investigation when a more comprehensive view of a joint or spinal segment is required.

We offer both services here at The Hanham Clinic. If you’re unsure which is right for your situation, our diagnostic MSK ultrasound scanning service is a great starting point for many soft tissue conditions, and we can always advise on escalating to MRI where clinically appropriate.

Do You Need a GP Referral for a Private MRI?

No. At The Hanham Clinic, we accept self-referrals, meaning you can request a private MRI scan without first visiting your GP. This is one of the most significant advantages of going private, as it removes a step that can add weeks to the process.

Self-referral is suitable for a wide range of musculoskeletal presentations, including persistent joint or back pain, a suspected soft tissue injury, or a chronic condition where you want greater clarity. After you book, our clinical team will carry out a brief telephone screening call to confirm the scan is appropriate for your situation and to check for any safety considerations before your appointment is confirmed.

We also happily accept referrals from GPs, physiotherapists, chiropractors, osteopaths, podiatrists and other registered healthcare professionals. Clinicians wishing to refer patients can contact us directly to register with our referral portal.

Our Open-Design Scanner: Built for Comfort

Traditional MRI scanners are long, narrow tunnels. For patients who experience claustrophobia, anxiety, or difficulty lying still, this can make scanning genuinely challenging, or even impossible.

Our brand-new scanner uses an open configuration that is significantly more comfortable than conventional machines. The design reduces feelings of confinement, the noise levels are lower, and you can speak with your clinician throughout the procedure. For patients who may have avoided an MRI in the past due to concerns about enclosed spaces, our scanner is well worth considering.

The machine delivers high-resolution imaging tailored specifically for musculoskeletal conditions, so there’s no compromise on diagnostic quality. Comfort and clinical clarity go hand in hand.

What Happens After Your Scan?

Once your scan is complete, your images are reviewed by an expert musculoskeletal radiologist who will produce a detailed written report. This report is delivered promptly, typically within a few working days, directly to you and, where applicable, your referring clinician.

The report gives a clear, structured account of the findings and will often include recommendations for next steps. If your results indicate that further treatment is needed, our team can discuss the options available at The Hanham Clinic. Depending on your diagnosis, that might include chiropractic care, or other services we offer on-site in Bristol.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a private MRI scan safe?

Yes. MRI does not use radiation. It uses magnetic fields and radio waves, making it safe for most patients. Our team will carry out a pre-scan screening to check for any contraindications such as certain metallic implants or a cardiac pacemaker before confirming your appointment.

How long does a private MRI scan take?

The scan itself typically takes around 45 minutes. You should allow a little extra time for arrival, preparation and any post-scan queries with our team.

Can I bring someone with me?

Yes. You’re welcome to bring a friend or family member to your appointment. They can wait in our reception area during the scan itself.

What should I wear?

Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing is ideal. You will be asked to remove any metal jewellery or accessories before entering the scanner room. Our team will advise you on anything specific to your appointment during your pre-scan screening call.

How quickly will I receive my report?

Reports are typically delivered within a few working days of your scan. We aim to turn results around as quickly as possible so your treatment planning isn’t delayed.
