The Hanham Clinic now offers advanced radial shockwave treatment in Bristol

If you’re searching for effective shockwave therapy in Bristol, to treat persistent tendon pain or a chronic musculoskeletal condition, The Hanham Clinic now offers advanced radial shockwave treatment.  Also known as Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT), we address your injury concerns with expert care and cutting-edge technology.

What is Shockwave Therapy and How Does It Work?

Radial shockwave therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses acoustic (sound) waves to stimulate your body’s natural healing process. This innovative therapy targets the site of injury with high-energy shockwaves delivered through a handheld device placed on the skin’s surface.

During a treatment session, the shockwave machine emits a series of rapid pulses that travel through tissue, increasing blood flow, breaking down scar tissue, and triggering a controlled inflammatory response to promote tissue repair and recovery.
Our skilled shockwave practitioners in Bristol will tailor the power, frequency, and number of shockwaves based on your specific tendinitis or tendinopathy condition, ensuring safe, personalised care.

Conditions Treated with Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) in Bristol

There is a growing body of clinical evidence supporting shockwave therapy (ESWT) for tendinitis and tendinopathy treatment. Our Bristol clinic specialises in treating:

  • Achilles tendinopathy (tendinitis)
  • Chronic plantar fasciitis
  • Calcific tendinopathy of the shoulder
  • Patellar tendinopathy (jumper’s knee)
  • Lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow)

Many patients experience significant reductions in pain and improved mobility following shockwave treatment (ESWT). The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) endorses shockwave therapy for specific musculoskeletal conditions when administered under appropriate clinical protocols.

Do I Need a Referral to Receive Shockwave Therapy?

Although we accept referrals and recommendations from other clinicians, such as GPs, private consultants, and other practitioners working in musculoskeletal care, it is not essential. You are welcome to contact us directly to discuss whether shockwave therapy may be suitable for your condition.

Is It Safe to Receive Shockwave Therapy?

Shockwave therapy is considered an extremely safe procedure, provided there are no contraindications to treatment. It is not suitable if you are taking certain blood-thinning (anti-clotting) medications, undergoing cancer treatment, have active cancer, or have had a recent confirmed tendon rupture in the area of concern (to name a few examples).

During a free telephone consultation or a one-to-one consultation at our clinic, our trained practitioners will assess your suitability in more detail and determine whether it is an appropriate treatment choice.

What to Expect During Your Shockwave Treatment (ESWT) at The Hanham Clinic in Bristol

We begin with a thorough assessment to confirm your suitability for shockwave therapy (ESWT).  Shockwave sessions typically begin more gently, with the intensity adjusted to your comfort level. You may feel tapping or pulsating sensations during treatment, which is normal. Most patients are able to resume normal activities immediately, and some notice quicker pain relief or improved mobility.
Post-treatment soreness or temporary aggravation in the first 24–48 hours is common and part of the natural healing process.
We also provide tailored rehabilitation exercises to complement your shockwave therapy (ESWT) and optimise your recovery.

Is There Any Difference Between Radial Shockwave Therapy and ESWT (Extracorporeal Shockwave)?

The abbreviation ESWT stands for Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy — meaning the shockwaves are applied externally to the body (as opposed to internally, as in the case of lithotripsy for kidney stones, which is a different procedure).
Radial Shockwave Therapy is a type of extracorporeal shockwave treatment.
The terms “shockwave therapy”, “shockwave treatment”, “radial shockwave”, and “ESWT” are often used interchangeably in clinical practice.

How Much Does Shockwave Therapy Cost in Bristol?

  • At The Hanham Clinic, our fees are very competitive.
  • A course of 4 sessions is priced at £260, and 6 sessions at £360.
  • Following a course of treatment, additional individual sessions can be booked on a pay-as-you-go basis for £68 each.
